What is IGCSE? Why is it the right choice for my child?

The Cambridge Assessment International Education offers the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) programme that is to be done over a period of two years. It is one of the most well-known international diplomas among pupils in the 14–16 age range.

About the course –

There are more than 70 subjects available, including 30 language courses, providing a range of options for students with varying skill levels. Assessments include written exams, oral endorsements, coursework and practical tests. The major subject categories include

1. Language
2. Mathematics
3. Science
4. Arts
5. Humanities
6. Technology

Examinations and grading –

1. Students are required to take a minimum of 5 subjects and a maximum of 14 subjects.

2. Students can choose between extended or core curriculum in math and science. Students who are capable of earning grades C to G should be able to complete the core curriculum easily. The extended curriculum is a specialisation in a subject that is more difficult and created for students who are capable of receiving grades A* to C.

3. Examinations are conducted in February, June and October which provides flexibility for students to stagger and complete subjects at their own pace.

Why IGCSE?

1. Inclusive – IGCSEs are not only for the high achievers but also for students who want to take it easy and do the basic level of certain subjects. The availability of core and extended options makes it viable for them to choose.

2. Logic-based learning – Students are taught to think critically and logically. These learning principles are well aligned with global standards and thus makes transition into universities simpler and easier.

3. Flexibility – Students are allowed to choose when they want to appear for the exams. They could split the subjects into two or three batches and do the final examinations with less stress.

4. Private candidacy – IGCSE examinations can be taken by homeschooled or private students who are unable to attend traditional full time school. They can register in a nearby IGCSE centre and appear for the exams.

5. Recognition – With the IGCSE, your child can benefit from one of the most respected academic qualifications in the world. There are over 400 schools in India offering the same in India.

The best course of action is to get in touch with a reputable institution that offers IGCSE tutoring. It is time to start looking for comprehensive information about IGCSE and ask questions you’d like to have addressed before you make a decision. To select and plan a programme that is appropriate for your child, you can schedule a meeting with an academic counsellor. Here, you can talk about your child’s academic skills and shortcomings and choose whether the IGCSE or another course is the best option. Once a choice is selected, it is possible to get the tutoring needed for success.
